Manoa Now is published by Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi, the independent student media organization of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (publisher of Ka Leo News, KTUH FM 90.1, and Hawaiʻi Review). This policy explains what information the Manoa Now mobile app ("the App") collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. It applies to the App only.
If you have questions about this policy or want to exercise any of the choices described below, contact us at webdeveloper@kaleo.org.
The short version
No accounts, no sign-in.
Manoa Now does not ask for your name, email, phone number, or any login. There is nothing to create or lose.
No in-app payment processing.
Ticket and reward links send you to third-party sites or apps for purchases.
Location stays on your phone.
With permission, it is used only to center the map and calculate distances on-device. It is never sent to or stored on our servers.
Anonymous analytics.
Aggregate feature-usage events are tied to a random per-install identifier, never your name, email, or other personal identity.
We do not sell your data, and we don't use advertising SDKs or ad trackers.
The rest of this document goes into more detail.
Information We Collect
1. Information tied to your device (not to you personally)
The App has no user accounts so it uses your device's built-in vendor identifier (iOS "identifier for vendor" or Android ID) as a technical key. This identifier is used only for:
- Push notifications: if you opt in, we store your device's push notification token and your notification preferences for the categories you want alerts for.
- Saved-item reminders: when you bookmark a deal, event, show, or sports ticket that has a date/time, we mirror just its title, date, and time to our database, keyed by your device identifier. This lets a scheduled background process notify you before the item expires or starts. If you remove the bookmark, this entry is deleted.
None of this information is linked to your name, email address, or any other personally identifying information.
2. Analytics
We use Firebase Analytics (Google) to understand how the App is used. This is to track which screens are visited, which buttons are tapped, and what people search for. Key details:
- Automatic data collection is disabled; we only log the specific, named events our code defines (screen views, taps on key actions, searches, content opens, feature usage).
- Events are associated only with Firebase's randomly generated, per-install App Instance ID, not your name, email, UH ID, or push token.
- We do not set a user ID or user profile in Analytics.
3. Location
The Map tab can use your device's location (with your permission) to center the map on your position and to sort nearby dining/buildings by distance, and "Get Directions" buttons can hand off your destination to your device's native maps app. Your location:
- Is requested through the standard iOS/Android permission prompt. You may decline, and the map still works, defaulting to the UH Mānoa campus.
- Is used entirely on your device and is never transmitted to or stored on our servers.
- Can be revoked at any time in your device's Settings.
4. Microphone / audio permission (Android)
The App declares the Android RECORD_AUDIO and MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS permissions. These exist solely because the KTUH live-radio player library needs to manage the device's audio session (e.g. so playback behaves correctly with phone calls or Bluetooth). The App does not access your microphone, and does not record or transmit audio from your device.
5. Information stored only on your device
The following are saved locally on your phone using standard on-device storage and are never uploaded to our servers (aside from the minimal reminder metadata described in section 1):
- Bookmarked/liked deals, events, dining spots, clubs, shows, sports tickets, and facilities
- Favorited job listings
- Which announcements you've already read
Uninstalling the App removes all of this local data.
6. Content you view
Campus content shown in the App, such as deals, events, dining info, club/RIO listings, job postings, tickets, KTUH shows/blog posts, Ka Leo News articles, Hawaiʻi Review issues, and campus building/facility info, is public information served from our Firebase Realtime Database, or fetched read-only from ktuh.org, kaleo.org, and manoanow.org. Viewing this content does not require or transmit any personal information about you.
7. Information we do not collect
We do not collect your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, government ID, payment/financial information, photos, contacts, or any account credentials. The App has no login system.
How We Use Information
- To deliver the push notifications you have opted into (e.g., "your saved deal expires tomorrow")
- To understand, in aggregate and anonymously, how people use the App so we can improve it
- To center the map on your location and provide directions, only if you've granted location permission
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles.
Third-Party Services
The App relies on the following services to function. Each handles data under its own privacy policy:
- Firebase (Google) — Realtime Database, Storage, Analytics, Remote Config, Cloud Functions: hosts campus content, powers anonymous analytics, delivers feature flags/remote text, and runs the scheduled reminder function.
- Expo push notification service (
exp.host): delivers push notifications to your device using your device's push token. - ktuh.org, kaleo.org, manoanow.org: public content sources (radio schedule/now-playing, news articles, blog posts) fetched read-only.
Tapping certain items in the App, including ticket links, the Hawaiʻi Athletics H-Pass, the Hawaii Rewards app download, or phone numbers for campus security/emergency services, opens an outside website, app store listing, or your phone's dialer. Those destinations are operated by third parties and governed by their own privacy policies, not this one.
We do not sell personal information to third parties, and we do not integrate advertising SDKs or third-party trackers.
Data Retention
- Device-linked records (push token, notification preferences, saved-item reminder metadata) are kept until you turn off notifications, remove the relevant bookmark, or request deletion (see below). They are also naturally pruned once a saved item's date has passed.
- Analytics events are retained according to Firebase Analytics' standard retention settings.
- Locally stored bookmarks/favorites/read-state live on your device until you delete them in-app or uninstall the App.
Your Choices
- Notifications: Turn all notifications, or individual categories, on or off anytime in More → Notifications, or by disabling them for the App in your device Settings.
- Location: Grant or revoke location access anytime in your device Settings. The App remains fully usable without it.
- Local data: Un-bookmark/un-favorite items anytime, or uninstall the App to remove all on-device data immediately.
- Deletion requests: Because we don't collect identifying information, we can't look up a record by name or email, but you can email webdeveloper@kaleo.org and we'll help delete your device-linked record (push token, preferences, saved reminders). Uninstalling the App also stops all future syncing.
Children's Privacy
Manoa Now is built for the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa campus community, which includes students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Security
We use industry-standard safeguards (including Firebase's access-control rules) appropriate to the limited, non-sensitive information the App handles. No payment, financial, or government-ID information is ever collected.
Your Privacy Rights
Because Manoa Now doesn't collect personal identifiers (no name, email, or account), most data-subject rights recognized under state privacy laws (such as California's CCPA/CPRA) are inherently satisfied. There is no personal profile tied to your identity to access, correct, or port. To the extent any state or other applicable law grants you rights over the limited, device-linked information described above, you can exercise them via the deletion request process described in "Your Choices." We do not sell personal information and have not done so in the preceding 12 months.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the "Effective date" above. Continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
